It's been a great 13 weeks learning more about the DAW and creating recording projects to get ready to put on social media. This trimester covered how to work with other disciplines with sound replacement.
The sound replacement skills we learned were:
ADR (Automatic Dialog Replacement)
Music
Sound Effects / Design
Foley
Background (Atmospherics / Atmofects – sonic color)
The team I was in was called 'The Black Hole Project' and we created sound replacements for a video titled 'The Black Hole'. Team members:
Philadephia Murefu
Alison Defrenne
Myself (Roy Fry)
The sound replacement was such a great experience and we were able to have a hands-on experience at creating replacement sound, that l personally can carry into another project into the future.
Quick Personal Thoughts on Sound Replacement

Live Sound - (Mr Conor Roberts)

I enjoyed learning how a professional live sound engineer operates at a live show. Conor gave us a quick but in-depth analysis of the skills that are expected from us if we go into live sound.
Conor talked us through:
Setting Equipment
Signal Flow
Stage Communication
Precision in setting up
Work Pace to keep the show running smooth
Open Attitude and mind
Quick Personal Thoughts on Live Sound
It was great doing live sound and that has now given me the tools on how to approach a live performance and the communication skills needed. I can now assist and prepare for live sound for either performing or working on the job
Skills I learned during research and Applied in Projects
Setting up dual reverbs.
Reamping techniques.
Different ways of setting up for live room recording.
Changing song tempo speed.
Putting a compressor plug-in between the Kick drum and Bass. Using the kick drum to trigger the compressor on the bass guitar track.
Quick Personal Thoughts on skills learned
By learning these skills for the DAW and utilizing them in projects has been an invaluable experience. It's the case of the more l learn, the more l need to learn, so I bought Steph's book 'Audio Production Principles' as a central learning point. I need a good starting point to grow from.
Main Recording Project

I assisted with the recording of the Imani Republic Band. Phil and l set up all the microphones and l took control of all the audio engineering and tracking in the Neve studio.
This was my first time actually recording a band and l learned some valuable lessons on how to set up the for live recording.
The 2 songs we recorded were titled:
Give
Wabaraka
Social Conscious Support Imani Republic Christian Band is working towards bringing and supporting the community awareness of Mental health problems throughout our society.
It was a great experience working with this Band as they were easy to work with, and l hope to continue an association with them in the future.
Quick Personal Thoughts on Recording Projects.
Since this was my first time ever recording a band, it gave me the experience of learning how to prepare for a session and what l need to learn to create the best recording product for a client. Pre-production is the key to organize a great outcome. I also learned about mental health problems within the industry, which l personally didn't realize was becoming a critical issue in all levels of the entertainment industry.
The Master Classes
I was also involved in Recording the 'Preloved Things' a psychedelic sounding local band, which was an excellent experience. I enjoyed watching how Guy Cooper (lecturer) sets up for a live recording and also the DAW for tracking. He talked us through the way, and how he would approach the recording of a band in this particular genre and the mindset you need to have to bring out the best outcome for the band.
With the Mixdown - Guy, and Adrian:
Different mixdowns varied from the two lecturers recording Preloved Things:
Guy - used the Neve Studio to show us the way he would mix down the band Preloved Things through the ProTools DAW and his approach in setting up the DAW for mixdown. To create a quality product by using the plug-ins that are available, Guy talked about equalizing, compressing, reverb, delay, and mastering.
Adrian - Set up in the Audient 8024, he talked about how to use the console to mix down the Preloved Things song and used his favorite $10 second-hand portable cassette tape player that doesn't work, however, he utilized the mono speaker in the unit as part of his reference guide to making sure every sound was balanced right in the mixing.
Quick Personal Thoughts on Master Classes

It was amazing how different the mixes sounded. I really enjoyed the masterclass session. The different approaches you can take towards a song and get a completely different sound. I have now started using a small mono speaker as a reference to the overall mixing guide.
Side Project - Drac"s Empire Drac"s Empire is a side project where l can experiment with different ways of recording and sound development.

Quick Personal Thoughts on the side project Drac"s Empire
I enjoyed experimenting with different ways of recording and mixing the project song.
I will be writing more songs over the break so I can start developing the idea as the main project for trimester 5. In trimester 5 l want to study EDM and more sound design so l can incorporate it into Drac"s Empires short film.
Trimester 4 at SAE has been a great learning experience and having AWESOME lecturers is a bonus.
