Creating an original song by recording it in the Neve Studio.
Last Tuesday Phil and l booked the Neve Studio to lay down the drums for an original song l had written. I did a ruff demo of the song at home and passed it onto Phil via email. I still have the last trimesters experience floating around in my mind and on how l can improve my communication skills with other people, so l talked it over with Phil to make sure he had everything that he needed to make the session go as smooth as possible.

We did our research online and found a couple of youtube demo's which we could try to use for this side project. (l will put the links at the end)
Mind you l still have a lot to learn about miking drums, but l think we did ok as we got a really nice sound in the DAW through the Neve console which is my personal favourite console medium.
Drum Microphones used for session
Kick in - Shure B52
Kick out - Shure B52
Snare - Shure SM57
Hi Hat - Shure SM57
Middle Tom - Shure SM57
Floor Tom - Sennhieser MD421
Overhead L/R - Sennhieser E614
Room in Mid/Side - AKG C414

Since this was our first time as a team to setup and get levels right to record properly, it did take us a little longer than it probably should, but we got there at the end. (setup time was 2 hrs)
l did learn more about the Neve studio, which will help us for this coming weeks session.
Below is the drum tracks transient showing we were able to get a good signal flow to the DAW.

Phil laid down the tracks quickly and we had three takes done in four run throughs. First run through to check levels and then lay the tracks down. Yes Phil had rehearsed the song before coming to record the song. (yeah)
l have already booked the Neve to do the bass guitar parts and have a fresh listen to the drum tracks.
The first link is about how to use the mid/side technique for drums and the second link is about using a compressor on drums, which we still have to try.
