The Balancing Act (Week 8 Blog 5)
On Tuesday in class the lecturers talked about how they approach a song to be mixed.
The EQing, compression, feel and balance of the song.
We were split into 2 groups and one half went to the Neve studio and the other half went to the Audient 8024 studio. DRAX group plus a 'ringin' went to Audient 8024 first and met lecturer Adrian Carroll there. He coached us on how to mix a song through using the stereo speakers and referencing the mix through a mono speaker to see if the balance is equal. What a great technique to get a quick reference to how the mix is sounding. So once you have your instruments EQ the way you want to present the song, you can then adjust the panning and volume and switch between the stereo and mono speaker setup to check the mix.
In the arvo we went to the Neve studio with lecture Guy Cooper and he was showing us how he approaches songs for mixing. Guy talked us through his work flow for a song he had uploaded onto ProTools. Guy showed us how he pin pointed sounds that interfered with the audio track by engaging the EQ plug-in and pull the sound that didn't sound right out of the audio track.
We also talked about the standard mastering levels that are being used in todays mediums for all creative disciplines. The era of the loudness wars is over and a more controlled standard has been implemented. I think the rule of thumb is dB-12 to dB-14 is the standard for volume level for mastering.
Will be emailing Guy this week to revisit mixing and mastering technquics.
