Reflecting on 4EB Radio Station

Accomplishing my internship at 4EB Radio Station was an excellent experience, as I had the opportunity to encounter a new environment and continue on with the development of my audio engineering skills. I also enjoyed the interaction with staff at 4EB working along with an unpretentious friendly community vibe there. The 2 senior audio engineers were really welcoming and helpful if I asked them for assistance, or any questions to further my knowledge. So, the overall experience at 4EB Radio Station was brilliant.

One of the key stand outs for me during my time there, was creating a mobile recording session with minimal equipment, that was a real learning curve and gave me alternative ideas to experiment with. I will be thinking differently when purchasing new equipment (as soon as I can afford it), to set up a similar concept for mobile recordings. Learning to think outside the box, is also an important mind set which I need to explore. By discovering different recording techniques will help me to become more flexible with recording sessions. I feel it will encourage me to be more creative and develop my audio engineering skills faster. (Link below to the blog page I wrote about the experience of a mobile recording setup.)

Doing my internship at 4EB, has been a valuable learning experience. I learnt:

  • Quickly organising and setting up before recording session.

  • Problem solving doing a recording session.

  • Using a different DAW.

  • The advantages of using different DAW's.

  • Creating a make shift recording studio.

  • Improving my editing skills.

  • Creating my own time management skills to get work done.

  • Communicating quickly during recording sessions.

SAE Relevance

SAE was a good commencement in the direction of my professional development and into the digital world of audio. I wasn’t very familiar with the digital recording DAW and needed to learn the basic skills and techniques required to catchup in the modern recording world. So, SAE was a brilliant medium for me to not only learn quickly, but also to get the skills essential for a good foundation, or starting point. I used SAE teachings to better my learning experience during my internship module.

What's my next move.

I've decided I want to learn more and keep on improving my personal and professional development, so I have now enrolled back at SAE to complete the Masters of Audio qualifications. I feel additional skills in this degree will open my mind up to even more to the art of modern audio engineering. By increasing my learning and knowledge on how to mix, combined with digital audio techniques, to the creative analog soul. I also want to keep challenging my own self growth, and I think that SAE is the perfect direction.

What else!

I've been mixing downloaded audio stems and creating backing tracks for a duo group. Adding midi sounds and mixing it all together to create custom backing track for the duo group. Eventually I would like to create a small mobile recording studio, but at the moment with COVID-19 it has been put on the back burner. This also depends on what opportunities will present themselves once it's safe for public gatherings again.

New career contacts

Working at the radio station didn't really create new contacts or for career advancement, but the staff at the station are second to none. I really enjoyed the community vibe in the station. The recording facilities are old however, I have been informed they are being up-dated soon. I think everyone at the station is settled into their roles and the ‘vacancy’ sign has been locked away. But never the less, I had a great time at the station anyway and great networking.

Conclusion

The experience at 4EB Radio Station was great. I am so grateful to the station for giving me the opportunity to learn and experience a different working environment. I can use this experience at the station to draw upon to solve any similar problems I may encounter in my career. To resolve small issue in a positive manner from different recording scenarios. Keeping a professional attitude and improving my knowledge as an audio engineer is the key to success. All in all, it's been a great experience at 4EB Radio Station.
