In the week 2 session, in the S6 studio. We also listened to different 5.1 surround sound mixes and talked about how different the mixers were from each other. Plus discussed how we could approach our own mixes.

In week 2, we talked about the microphones they use and the different recording techniques which can be applied to get the desired surround sound for your project.

The main surround sound microphone techniques are:

The Decca tree microphone set up, which has its own specialized holder stand. (to the left)

Just by looking at these diagrams above, you can see there are a lot of choices you can choose from in creating the immersive audio you want through different microphone settings and technical applications.

You have 2 array system which you can choose from. (Array means - your physical microphone setup whether they are on stands or all in one microphone are working together to record sound simultaneously. Some different Surround sound microphones and microphone holders pics below.)

The first one is a coincident array and this technique is when the microphones are set up close to each other.

The second one is known as space array, and this technique gives you a 3 dimensional sound.

At the moment I'm only scratching the surface on this subject, as l don't know a great deal about it. But if l what to create good surround sound mixes then l need to have a solid understanding of how they record to create immersive audio.

I find it totally amazing what you can create with immersive audio and how they are striving to get the quality of surround sound, even more, engaging for the listener.

Here's a video to check out.

Dr Hyunkook Lee from DPA microphones is giving a rundown on the research they are conducting.

I found this website that has more surround sound techniques.
