1. Module Guidelines.

2. Syncing a beat to the grid.

3. Midi Setup.

1. Module

It was great to checkout this trimester guideline, so l can start planning how I am going to receive the workload. It will be interesting to hear all the AUM162.1 project music. From selecting three or more parts from different songs, then create an original composition. Hearing songs grow from conception through to the completion for week 6 will be a great learning curve, as l have never done this before. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.

2. Project AUM162.1

I decided to research some basic tools that will help me accelerate my workflow for the project. Since we will be using drums, bass and melody, getting the drums quickly synced to the first beat of every bar would be the first step.

  • Record the song that I will be using as a drum reference to Pro Tools

  • Sync the song's tempo to the first beat of the bar.

  • Create a midi track.

  • Loop the section of drums you want to manually copy

  • Copy drum parts manually via midi keyboard controller.

I also wanted to research about elastic audio, even though we are using midi for this project. The concept would be handy to experiment with the bass or melody. By playing the drum rhythm and using the elastic audio to match the beats of the bars in the next reference song, could save time when l copy the rhythmic pattern. For example, bass and melody rhythms.

3. Midi Setup.

I’m currently not that brilliant with midi, even though I have just started exploring the fantastic world of midi music, and the endless applications and options in the virtual midi universe.

This project gives me a great opportunity to explore different theories on how to setup midi tracks quickly in the DAW (Pro Tools). What I like about midi, is just how versatile it is, from sound design to textual reinforcement. You can add midi to a kick drum and create a really full, rich sound, that is aesthetically pleasing to the ear and creates a whole new listening experience.
