This week has been about squeezing in time to get the mixing prepared for show and tell on Wednesday morning. I have been listening to the reference songs to hear how they mix all the instruments, the sounds they use, and if the W&B Funk Bros material is similar. What I have noticed is that if you don’t track the recording sounds that you are hearing in your mind at the beginning of the original takes, it can be difficult to replicate and create the sound when it comes to mixdown time. I really need to learn to create the sounds straight up before recording any tracks and research how the sound is achieved.
I think the B&W Funk Bros will use the song references to get a mix on the instrument dB levels and panning, but as far as replicating the sounds, we are already starting on the back foot and will have a lot of trouble with getting the song reference sounds exactly the same.
I’ve been organizing demos and passing them on to Voodoo to check out and give me guidance into what he feels should change in the mix. It would be a lot easier if we were in a studio together hunched over a mixing console, as I’m finding by preparing online sharing can take more time between mixes of songs.
Here is a pic of some basic automation of the dB levels being tweaked below.
